Alvaro Visits Suzuki Factory Ahead Of Test

Rizla Suzuki MotoGP riders Loris Capirossi and Alvaro Bautista visited the Suzuki Factory at Hamamatsu in Japan earlier this week, en-route to the second test of the year at Sepang in Malaysia.

Capirossi and Bautista were joined on the trip to Suzuki’s headquarters by Team Manager Paul Denning and were given a tour of the base for Suzuki’s global activities.

The trio were shown around the ‘Suzuki Plaza’ museum by Suzuki’s Directors Mr.Toshihiro Suzuki and Mr. Masanori Atsumi and Managing Officer Mr. Sadayuki Inobe. The group were able to inspect many of Suzuki’s historical products including original Suzuki looming machines, Suzuki’s first ever powered two-wheeler the ‘Power Free’ motorised bicycle , the ‘Colleda’ – the first true motorcycle produced by Suzuki – and the RM62 (50cc), which won Suzuki’s first motorcycle Grand Prix at the Isle of Man TT in 1962.

Capirossi and Bautista also visited Suzuki’s race department and met with engineers to discuss the detailed progress that is being made in the development of the 2010 Suzuki GSV-R that the pair will be riding during this season’s MotoGP World Championship.

Capirossi and Bautista now head to Malaysia for an important second test this week. The pair will be trying the latest updates for their Suzuki GSV-R’s at the 5,548m Sepang International Circuit. Capirossi had a promising test there earlier this month when he finished sixth overall on the timesheets and new team-mate Bautista will be looking to continue with the impressive learning development that he has shown since making the move up to MotoGP from the 250cc class.

Alvaro Bautista:
“I want to say thank you to Suzuki for their invitation and for a great experience today. I am new to MotoGP, and new to Suzuki, but I really feel more like part of the Suzuki family each day. The engineering facility is amazing, it really opened my eyes to what goes on to support us and after visiting the museum I know a lot more about Suzuki’s history. It is incredible to see such a huge company still feeling like a family business and everyone is so friendly and welcoming. I did my best to tell the engineers my exact feedback from the bike, but first I need to push my own level to the maximum and get to the limit of the bike – then it’s my right to complain and request better performance, but not yet! I feel the same as Loris – very motivated and very sure that Suzuki will do its maximum to support us.”

Second Sepang Test: Preview

Second Sepang Test: Preview

Three weeks after the first official test of the year at the Sepang International Circuit the MotoGP riders will return to the Malaysian track this week to carry on with the developments of their respective prototypes, ahead of the start of the World Championship season in Qatar on April 11.

Scheduled for three days from February 24-26 the opening day on Wednesday will be for test riders only, with Thursday and Friday offering valuable time for the team riders to further the customisation of their 2010 machines.

Valentino Rossi set the standard at the first test with the only sub-2’01” lap of the test on his M1, and the Fiat Yamaha rider and reigning World Champion will again be working on new aspects of the setting on his bike. His team-mate Jorge Lorenzo will not be testing however as he continues his recovery from a hand injury sustained in a training accident.

Casey Stoner was pleased with the reaction of the new engine in the Desmosedici GP10 of the Ducati Marlboro team, as was team-mate Nicky Hayden, and the duo will again focus on finding their comfort zones. Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa was happy with his RC212V after the first test and both he and team-mate Andrea Dovizioso will maintain their acclimatisation to the bike.

Rizla Suzuki will have their new GSV-R engine for Loris Capirossi and Álvaro Bautista to test, and Monster Yamaha Tech3 pairing Ben Spies and Colin Edwards will look to build on what was a pleasing opening test on their M1 machines. Pramac Racing’s Aleix Espargaró and Mika Kallio will have their second rides on the GP10, and Marco Melandri (San Carlo Honda Gresini) and Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda) will both persist with the RC212V.

Hiroshi Aoyama (Interwetten Honda MotoGP), Héctor Barberá (Paginas Amarillas Ducati) and Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini) will all gain more important experience ahead of their debut seasons in the premier class.

Positive first year balance for Fan’s Club

Positive first year balance for Fan’s Club

Last Saturday the Fan’s Club Alvaro Bautista had it’s first annual member meeting in Talavera de la Reina to evaluate the first year of its existence. Overall it’s been a positive balance.
Club president César Mendoza said “As everyone knows we started with nothing and we ended the year with a number of 1800 members and a bit of capital at our hands. It’s not much, but it’s enough to start the year with a bit of joy and giving our best for the members. The less we have to spend and the more we can give back to the fans, the better.” The new budget is about 8000 Euros. “We had some plus, so we start this year better than the last one, because we want to invest it for our members, the ones who really deserve it are true fans of Alvaro.”

The event calender for this year again has a lot of travel for the fanclub members in store. Additionally to the three Spanish GP rounds (Jerez, Catalunya, Valencia), they’ll also be present at Estoril and Misano this season to support Alvaro during the race weekends.
On location in Talavera the fanclub will continue with its big annual celebration and also be present again at the Talavera fair. But there will also be two new events. One will be a bike meeting, hosted together with their sponsor La Sixtina, and the other will be a kids fest, “so that the children of Talavera are getting to know Alvaro and the world of motorcycles and that everybody knows about us and what we do, because Alvaro and Talavera is known worldwide; that everybody speaks about us and speaks well, of course.”

Alvaro’s father Javier and his manager Armando were both present at the fanclub meeting while Alvaro himself was already flying to Japan on Saturday to visit the Suzuki factory. From there he travels to the next MotoGP test in Sepang which will start with test riders tomorrow and see the official riders on track from Thursday.
Mendoza affirmed that Alvaro feels very good ahead of this new stage in his career and that right now he just wants to get used to the bike and see what the real potential is of him and the bike with the new engine.

You can now register again as a fanclub member for the 2010 season. To find out how, click here.

A History Of Bati’s Helmets

A History Of Bati’s Helmets

Have you ever wondered about Alvaro’s helmets and their designs? We give you an overview of all the personally designed helmets Alvaro’s been using in his career so far.
And once you’ve found out all about them, you can VOTE for your favourite in our exclusive poll here

Alvaro started his world championship career as a wildcard in 2002 with the helmet sponsor NZI. It’s a relatively small Spanish company that isn’t too well-known outside the Iberian Peninsula, but they sponsored a lot of Spanish racing stars in the past and Alvaro stayed with them for six seasons.

His first personal NZI helmet in 2002 was designed to match his Atletico Madrid livery back then and it made a great looking complete package. Alvaro wore that helmet for all races in the Spanish Championship that year and his wildcard entries in Catalunya and Jerez. His mascot at the time was already a devil, albeit not looking much like the mascot he has nowadays. He wore a differently designed helmet for his wildcard at the Valencian GP which was most likely a regular design of NZI’s product line that year.

2003 was Bati’s first full season in the 125cc world championship and his NZI Vitesse helmet design was a pretty simple one at that time. But the silver base design with black, red and blue elements, topped off with stickers of his name, number and mascot already bore some resemblance to his design in the following years. It’s interesting to note that for the first two races of the 2003 season Alvaro’s mascot was not a devil but instead the head of a bull with fire coming out of its nostrils. The inaugural Spanish championship round in Catalunya was the first time we saw the fun devil mascot that Alvaro still has today.

In 2004 Bati wore the same helmet as in 2003 for the first race in South Africa and in various practice sessions throughout the year, but at the Jerez GP he unveiled the trademark helmet design which should stay with him until the end of his championship winning season in 2006. Although the design stayed the same (bar a few very minor variations of colours and shapes) the helmet was further developed by NZI and Alvaro promoted the NZI Vitesse and NZI Razer II with this design during the years.

There were only two different designs during that time. The first was a special one-off helmet for the Valencian GP 2004 which – along with Alvaro’s leathers – had a slightly different colour scheme to represent the Spanish flag. And Alvaro’s championship helmet which he wore during the Japanese GP in 2006 and during the practice sessions of the following Portuguese and Valencian GP was a modified version of his normal design with a large number 1 on each side.

With his move to the 250cc class in 2007 Alvaro also changed his helmet design completely. His new NZI Spyder III helmet, designed by the Spanish company Zero Racing, now matched his blue and white livery much better. A blue and silver base colour with dominant red details and tribal features made the perfect addition to the rest of his safety gear. An interesting detail of the first helmets he wore that year are the colours of the Spanish flag incorporated on top of the helmet. However, these were not used in all GPs that year and the replicas sold by NZI do not include the Spanish flag either.

2008 saw not only a colour change for the Aspar Team, but also a change of helmet sponsor for Alvaro as he switched to Suomy. His first personalised design of the Suomy Spec 1R, created by Bargy Design, wasn’t used for long though. The very bold blue, red and white design tries to play with Alvaro’s devil mascot and features two stylised devil heads on the back and the top of the helmet. The helmets used by Alvaro in the races also have his name embedded in the design on the back. However, due to a company policy of Suomy this is not a feature of the replicas sold to the public. Suomy replicas in general do not include the personal numbers or names of the riders, these are only made specifically for their sponsored riders.

Already in Mugello, the 6th Grand Prix of the 2008 season, Alvaro began to wear his new 2009 design regularly. Considering his red & white livery since the start of 2008, the mostly red and silver 2009 Spec 1R design fit much better in the combination and he kept the helmet all throughout last year as well. Just like with the 2008 helmet the race version of the 2009 helmet also has a stylised “Bautista” on the backside which is not included in the replicas sold by Suomy. This design and all special one-off helmets during the 2008 and 2009 season were created by the Italian company Starline Designers.

Special designs 2008 & 2009
Alvaro wore different helmets on three occasions in 2009 – Catalunya, Misano and Valencia – and one time in 2008 for the Jerez GP

His unique helmet design for Catalunya showed comic characters of Don Quixote and Sancho Pansa on the back and a grim-looking windmill on top of the helmet. Alvaro’s hometown Talavera de la Reina lies in Castilla La-Mancha where the story of the book Don Quixote takes place which is a big part of La Mancha’s culture. Bati said about the design: “It is a design that I like a lot, it’s very original. Don Quixote is from La Mancha, like me, and we say that he was a bit of a crazy hero, a knight who went out to fight on his horse. He fought against wind mills, I fight against other riders.”

At the San Marino GP 2009 Alvaro wore a helmet during the race which appears to be a regular design of Suomy’s 2010 product range and is called “Wall Street”.

The very simple design of Alvaro’s helmet at the Valencian GP 2009 was a tribute to his team manager and good friend Jorge Martinez Aspar. Since it was already clear by the time that Alvaro would not continue his career with the Aspar Team, he wanted to honour the man who helped him become 125cc world champion in 2006 and fight for the 250cc crown multiple times. The helmet is a replica of the design Aspar wore during his active racing career and features a personal dedication from Alvaro to Jorge and his entire team.

The helmet design Alvaro presented at the Jerez GP 2008 featured a red and yellow Spanish colour combination with two big “B”s for Bautista on the side of the helmet and his mascot on the back. Unfortunately this special design did not bring him any luck as he had an engine seizure during the race which cost him the win.

The future

Bati will stay with helmet sponsor Suomy for the 2010 season, his first one in the MotoGP class. His newest design which we saw for the first time at the Sepang test earlier this month looks similar to the Jerez 2008 helmet in its pattern idea with the two “B”s on the sides, but its colour scheme is much brighter, featuring the Rizla Suzuki baby blue mixed with very colourful pink and yellow elements. Alvaro’s newest helmet design is again created by Bargy Designs.

Preseason interview from Sepang

Preseason interview from Sepang

Motociclismo.es has published a short interview with Alvaro which focuses on his impressions from the first preseason test in Sepang and his general feeling with the MotoGP bike.

How did these two days go for you?
Well, it was the first return back to work after a long break, so I dedicated the entire first day to become accustomed to the bike again and I think that went very well. I tested several things, but in general we focused on finding a base setup for me to be comfortable with the bike. Loris was the one to test a lot of new stuff, because he’s got so much more experience while for me everything is new and I don’t know whether things are better or worse. For me it’s been going better every time I was on the bike, but the only thing I can say is whether it goes better or worse for me, I can’t compare it with other things.

What do you find the most difficult?
A little bit of everything, but at this track what I’ve noticed more is that when you try to control the bike without the brakes, it is difficult to get it into the curve. It does not let me take the line I want which is a bit like in 250cc and 125cc where you wait a little and then close the line. Additionally, not being able to enter the corners well also affects me when getting out of them, but we are working on it step by step.

You are still working with the engine from last year. Does it worry you to start a little behind the rest?
A little bit. Loris tested some parts of the new engine and I am sure that they are working hard to keep the power that we had and combine it with better durability, so I have to trust Suzuki and they have assured us that for the next test we will have the new engine. We also tested a slightly smaller frame, because this year we need a bike for the small ones, not one like last year for Loris and Vermeulen which was higher.

Your plan is to go step by step, but with so little testing before the first race, you can’t sleep either, can you?
Yes, the truth is that for the Rookies this is probably the worst year and even though we had one extra test last year, that was during the winter with colder temperatures and the ones we have this year are widely spread with a lot of time between them. Therefore, when we return to Sepang it will be necessary for me to get a feeling for the bike again… But things are like they are and we have to find a good basis to be prepared for all circuits. I think that I’m improving at the right speed and I am only about two seconds slower than Valentino. What’s important is to have a good feeling with the bike and to know why it does this or that.

Have you used less traction control here? Because in the first tests you had a pretty restricted bike.
In Portugal they already took a little bit of it out and here I had it completely free. It’s a much wider track and you don’t notice it as much as in Valencia or Estoril, in fact there are a few points where it wouldn’t even make a difference if you did more of a wheelie.

Maybe in this sense the new engine loses something?
The ideal would be for it not to and we are working on that. But it will be difficult, because they used to have one engine per race and now they have to last three races.

What was it like to ride in the wet?
It was great, the bike has enough grip and when you open the gas a little it slides so much and it’s a lot of fun.
